the band that defines our generation?
This isn't a question if you enjoy listening to them, but it seems like they just don't go away, put out an album every couple of years and have multiple singles chart. Much like the Stones and Who. It isn't out of the realm of possiablity that in 20 years we will see them all old and grey playing a Super Bowl halftime show wishing they would just give it up because they sound horrible.

Foo Fighters have always been kinda meh to me. They've got a few songs I like, and I don't have a problem with them or anything, but they've never excited me.
Whether you like them or not, I think Red Hot Chili Peppers are probably the band that defines our generation. They did some interesting stuff early in their career, had an iconic look (with the socks), made a comeback, and released what seems like a ton of records that all sound the same.

I'm not sure. I never quite know how to think about these sorts of questions. The Foo Fighters are probably one of the bands who most successfully transitioned from the old ways of being a band or a musician into the new ways. They were around at the back end of vinyl and tapes, then seem to have got more successful as music became more prominent online and through digital consumption. Also, I think they (Grohl at least) are very fan friendly and interactive with fans online. So they know how to cater to today's audience very well which keeps them popular and successful.

Yeah it's hard for me to say because I've never really been a "mainstream guy". I'm more classic 80s and 90s metal. Foo fighters are huge though. I think Dave grohl is a genius. He went from being the no named drummer in nirvana to the front man of one of the most popular bands of his time

Something occurred to me the other day, while hearing the Foo Fighters on the radio. I really can't stand Dave Grohl's singing. I think that's the thing that stops me liking them more. It sounds like he's trying really hard to sound rrrrooooccckkk, and it sounds kinda phoney to me.
On the other hand, I think Kurt Cobain was one of the great rock 'n roll singers. It's not so much that he could "sing" in a technical sense (in the way that, say, Whitney Houston could sing), but the dude could really sing, you know?

Grohl is just an all around great musician. But, I always did like Cobains singing style better. Grohl and Cobain as individuals really are so different though. Dave grohl just seems to be a genius at creating a "hit", whereas Kurt Cobain was more like the 90s Jim Morrison of Grunge. He was an innovator and set a bar for a new genre in a sense.
With that said, I like Cobains originality WAY better than anything Dave grohl has done, from a vocal standpoint. But if I ever wanted to make money Dave grohl would be the first guy I'd call lol

I'm sure we've had a similar conversation before about Dave Grohl. I don't hate the Foo Fighters but I'm not nuts about them either. They have some OK songs but I also don't like Dave Grohl's singing. He just isn't very good. Sort of like a drunk guy at a karaoke trying to be Ronnie James Dio or someone like that.
Kurt Cobain to me was sort of like an Aretha Franklin or Marvin Gaye in that his voice had that special and distinctive quality to tear at a listeners emotions and force them to feel what he was feeling. Sort of like a soul singer in a sense, only screaming it out violently instead of smoothly letting it float through the air. Dave Grohl and the vast majority of singers don't have that, in my opinion. I suppose it's unfair to compare the two, but it is inevitable.

Dave grohl is more of a total package musician than "vocalist". He's not the best vocalist, best guitarist, or best drummer, but he damn sure knows how to merge it all together and create something that a vast majority want to hear. He's kind of like a John cena....Not the best at anything he does but manages to bring it all together and create arguably the biggest buzz for what he does. Dave grohl is a perfect example of having the "it factor" but you can't explain exactly why. He just does
