A backlash from who? Snooty film critics? He was probably just too busy getting laid for the next couple of years to do anything else.

If I recall, despite the backlash, that movie couldn't have done anything bad for his career. Plus there's no such thing as bad publicity. The thing for me was Leo couldn't have been more wrong for the part, but, he still did a good job. He just didn't fit that heroic role for me
